What web hosting companies are good on security? Which have been unresponsive?
If you are a website owner, how do you feel about your web host’s seriousness about security and prevention of hacking, etc.? If you have had any problems, were they responsive? We get asked a lot for recommendations for good web hosts – and hosts to avoid – but there is no substitute for personal experience. Let us know if you’ve had a good or a bad interaction with a web hosting provider around security.
ixwebhosting just upgraded their linux servers to the most recent (and I believe last) version of PHP 4. They are generally fairly fast to jump on security updates on their Windows boxes, though they have had failures on specific server clusters during these upgrades (the ONLY downtime I ever experience with this company.)
Overall I’d give them a 4 out of 5 for security. They still have some old PHPBB2 code (not even the LAST 2, and they are on 3 now) as the default forum code for the site, which has some fairly severe security issues. They still also run a few VERY old cgi scripts that, while fairly secure in themselves, if not properly set up can be VERY insecure (and they offer no help setting these permissions up.)
In fact, right now on my very own website I can change the contents of one of my pages just by knowing which parameters to send to a cgi script. Granted, no one will ever find out outside me, but if someone really wanted to break in they could (OR I’d lose important functionality.)
My 2 cents
Thanks! That kind of review of a hosting company on security issues is exactly what I’m looking for.
I want to add, their customer service is incredible. You can call them, they have live chat that’s fairly instant (if they are there) and they usually respond to their service tickets via email within an hour. Lately it’s been upwards of 6 hours, but not every time, and once you make first contact the back and forth goes by quickly.
If i were looking for a new webhosting company, I’d do some Google searches. Use terms like:
